In 2018, I embarked on the journey of a lifetime: I ran for Congress in Alabama's 3rd District as the Democratic Nominee. It was the single greatest decision I have ever made.
I am so proud of the way our campaign excited Alabamians, raised national awareness about the issues facing our beloved state, built a volunteer community from Anniston to Auburn, increased voter registration and turnout, gained impressive endorsements, and most importantly, inspired other young people to get involved in the world around them. Our 2018 campaign further illuminated a fire in me for justice, equity, community, and access to opportunity that continues to burn bright today.
In Alabama, Republicans have held a supermajority since 2010. With that, we continue to rank at the bottom of almost every national poll regarding healthcare, infrastructure, education, government transparency, and LGBTQIA rights. I stand by what I spent a majority of 2018 saying: We deserve better. Our kids deserve better.
That's why I'm gearing up to run again in 2022. This time, however, I want to be an advocate for my community in Montgomery. I'm exploring a run for the Alabama State House in District 25— this time, the district is winnable.
How does my running in Alabama affect you? Here are a few examples:
- Women in Office: More women in politics at a local and state level leads to greater representation on a federal level;
- Policy Permeates: State legislatures and their policy decisions permeate throughout the nation. For instance, the introduction of a ban on transgender healthcare or women’s reproductive rights in one state emboldens another to do the same;
- Balance of Power: Electing Democrats in Alabama will create a balance of power and thus encourage robust debate and bipartisanship to get things done;
- Generational Diversity: As it stands, there are 4 people under the age of 40 in the Alabama legislature. Diversity of thought and experience is necessary to craft and pass more inclusive, progressive policy;
- Gun Violence Prevention: Republicans in the AL legislature are proposing to eliminate the need for a gun permit, going so far as to grant gun ownership and access to over 6,000 people who have been denied in the past. As we all know, state lines are no boundary for weapons. This type of policy proposal affects more than just Alabamians.
It’s an open seat with a small margin for victory, and I’m ready to take on the challenge.
Before I can do that, though, I need your help. The cost of starting a campaign is tough to manage! Will you help me announce my candidacy with a strong fundraising showing? Will you make a pledge to donate today?
With my initial $25,000 goal, I will:
- Pay to put my name on the ballot
- Establish the systems needed to run a successful campaign (Votebuilder, ActBlue, Bank Account, Compliance, etc.)
- Hire a Campaign Manager and Field Director
- Develop a cohesive plan for field operations
- Plan an event to announce my campaign and garner public interest
- Order merch to build community awareness and interest
I appreciate you so much. Thank you for being a part of my village and community. I’m bringing the same fire and passion to this race that I mustered in 2018. I hope to make you proud!
